What is keratoconus ?
Dr Rajeev Raut Eye Clinic Raut Eye Care
Normally your cornea, the clear outer lens or front part of the eye, has a dome shape, like a ball. Sometimes the structure isn’t strong enough to hold its round shape and it bulges outward, like a cone. This is called keratoconus.
Exact causes of keartoconus are unknown but according to research most of the keratoconus cases are hereditary
Age: Usually starts after puberty. In some cases keratoconus can start before puberty also. Less common in people older than 40 years of age
Systemic disorders : Keratoconus can be associated with certain disorders such as Down syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, and retinitis pigmentosa.
Inflammation: Inflammation from things like allergies, asthma, or atopic eye disease can break down the tissue of the cornea.
Eye rubbing: Rubbing your eyes hard over time can break down the cornea. It can also make keratoconus progress faster if you already have it.
The earliest symptom one may experience is a slight blurring of vision or progressively poor vision that is not corrected with glasses only
Other symptoms of keratoconus include:
Glare and halos around lights
Difficulty seeing at night
Eye irritation or headaches associated with eye pain
Increased sensitivity to bright light
Sudden worsening or clouding of vision
A complete eye examination along with few diagnostics test such as corneal topography, pachymetry will help your ophthalmologist to detect and study the progress of keratoconus .
Treatment of keratoconus depends upon the stages of the disease , the aim being to give a clear vision
Early stage Keratoconus
Glasses are prescribed to give a clear vision.
RGP , Rose K lenses and Sclearal lenses
As keratoconus progresses and worsens, glasses are no longer capable of providing clear vision, so patients are prescribed specialised lenses which not provide clear vision but also helps in stopping the progression of keratoconus.
Intermediate Stages
Progressive keratoconus can be treated by corneal collagen cross-linking.
Advanced Stages
Corneal ring
Corneal Transplant
Absolutely love how understanding Dr. Kumud Raut is. The only place where I have not been told about only the process of getting a surgery, but rather they insist on educating about how the eye functions and the importance of having a healthy eye before any surgery.
