What is keratoconus ?
Exact causes of keartoconus are unknown but according to research most of the keratoconus cases are hereditary Age: Usually starts after puberty. In some cases keratoconus can start before puberty also. Less common in people older than 40 years of age Systemic disorders : Keratoconus can be associated with certain disorders such as Down syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, and retinitis pigmentosa. Inflammation: Inflammation from things like allergies, asthma, or atopic eye disease can break down the tissue of the cornea. Eye rubbing: Rubbing your eyes hard over time can break down the cornea. It can also make keratoconus progress faster if you already have it.
Why do my eyes water in the mornings?
Watery eyes in the mornings can have various causes : - Abrupt changes in ambient light can lead to tear production. - Environmental irritants such as cold wind, bright lights, smoke, dust, chemicals, insect or mosquito repellants in the form of aerosol sprays, vaporisers etc. - Yet another cause is allergic rhinitis with associated sneezing, runny nose along with watery eyes due to something in the bedroom environment [dust, dust mites, cold and animal dander]
Signs of high eye pressure
High eye pressure medically termed as intraocular pressure (IOP)is related to ocular conditions called GLAUCOMA and OCULAR HYPERTENSION.
GLAUCOMA is an eye disease related to the eye pressure causing damage to the optic nerve whereas in OCULAR HYPERTENSION there is rise in eye pressure
Glaucoma also known as silent killer of vision usually shows no signs in the initial stages
As the disease progresses , one might experience some signs and symptoms
In Later or advanced stages of glaucoma one may develop some signs and symptoms
Why do I get styes ?
There are a number of tiny glands in the eyelids which open through ducts onto the lid margins near the base of the eyelashes. An obstruction of the ducts of any of these glands prevents the secretions of the glands from coming out. The secretions then accumulate and the gland may get inflamed. A stye is a small red painful boil that occurs in the eyelid at the base of an eyelash. It occurs due to an acute infection within the glands at the eyelid. It is also called external hordeolum. Multiple styes may be present and occasionally it may involve the entire lid margin.
What should I do to prevent my childs number from increasing?
1. Make sure your child spends as much time as they can spare doing some outdoor activities especially during day time. 2. Your child should avoid using a phone, laptop or any other digital device and should only use them when it's absolutely required. 3. There are commercially available spectacle lenses that as per studies show and give us upto 60% control over the increase in number. 4. Some eye drops proscribed by your doctor offer some control over increasing number in some cases. All of the above options either individually or in combination can help you control the increasing number to some extent but should be advised after a checkup by your doctor.
Why are my eyes watering?
Watering from the eyes can be a troublesome problem often needing one to keep wiping the eye and sometimes interfering with vision as the eyes get filled with tears . Tears are formed in the tear glands ; they moisten the eye and during blinking movements are pumped through tiny openings (puncti) at the inner corners of the eyes into the tear ducts which drain them into the nose to be eliminated from the body . Watering which is constant or long standing or associated with other symptoms such as redness, discharge, pain or decreased eyesight needs to be investigated properly . Causes of watering can be broadly divided into 2 groups : 1. Excessive tear secretion into the eye by the tear glands and , 2. Inadequate drainage of tears from the eye by the tear ducts.
