What is Refraction Test

Refraction Tests are eye examinations that are used to measure the ability of the eye to refract or bend light as it passes through the cornea and lens. The test measures the eye's ability to focus on objects at near and far distances.

During the test, the eye doctor will ask the patient to look through a device known as a phoropter. The phoropter contains a series of lenses with different strengths that the doctor will use to determine the power of the patient’s eyes.

The doctor will ask the patient to look through the phoropter at an eye chart and read out certain letters on the chart.Depending on the patient’s response, the doctor will adjust the lenses in the phoropter until the patient can read the letters on the chart correctly.

This process is repeated until the doctor is able to determine the correct power of lenses needed to correct the patient’s vision.

When to do Refraction Test

  1. Refraction tests should be done in people of all ages, including children, to assess their vision and determine their prescription for glasses or contact lenses. Refraction tests should also be done if symptoms of vision problems are present, such as blurred vision, double vision, or difficulty seeing at night.
  2. If you are experiencing sudden changes in vision, such as an increase in nearsightedness or farsightedness, or if you notice a sudden decrease in vision, you should consult a doctor urgently for a refraction test. Additionally, if you have any pain or discomfort in your eyes, or if you experience any flashing lights or floaters in your vision, you should consult a doctor urgently for a refraction test.

Diseases in which Refraction Test is done

  1. Myopia: A Refraction Test will help measure the amount of nearsightedness (myopia) by measuring the amount of light refracted (bent) by the eye. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Myopia.
  2. Hyperopia: A Refraction Test will help measure the amount of farsightedness (hyperopia) by measuring the amount of light refracted (bent) by the eye. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Hyperopia.
  3. Presbyopia: A Refraction Test will measure the amount of difficulty focusing on objects near the eye. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Presbyopia.
  4. Astigmatism: A Refraction Test will measure the amount of light that is not focused correctly on the retina. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Astigmatism.
  5. Cataracts: A Refraction Test will measure the amount of light that is not focused correctly because of the clouding of the lens. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Cataracts.
  6. Glaucoma: A Refraction Test will measure the amount of pressure within the eye. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Glaucoma.
  7. Diabetic Retinopathy: A Refraction Test will measure the amount of damage to the small blood vessels in the eye. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy.
  8. Macular Degeneration: A Refraction Test will measure the amount of vision loss that has occurred as a result of damage to the macula. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Macular Degeneration.
  9. Keratoconus: A Refraction Test will measure the amount of steepening of the cornea. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Keratoconus.
  10. Dry Eye Syndrome: A Refraction Test will measure the amount of tear production in the eye. This will help confirm the diagnosis of Dry Eye Syndrome.

How Refraction Test is done

  1. The Refraction Test is a painless and quick procedure that is used to measure your eyes’ ability to focus on objects at different distances. During the test, I will ask you to look at a chart of letters or symbols, and to identify which lines of letters or symbols that you can see clearly.
  2. I will then use automated equipment to measure how much light enters your eyes and how well your eyes are able to focus on the chart. The equipment will measure the power of your eyes and determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
  3. The automated equipment is very easy to use, and it will not be necessary for me to touch your eyes. The entire procedure usually takes only a few minutes. Once the refraction test is complete, I can help you find the perfect eyeglass frames or contact lenses that will best suit your vision needs.

Absolutely love how understanding Dr. Kumud Raut is. The only place where I have not been told about only the process of getting a surgery, but rather they insist on educating about how the eye functions and the importance of having a healthy eye before any surgery.
