Yes.. most of the people with cylindrical power can wear contact lenses
Spherical power is when the cornea is curved equally in all directions and cylindrical power / astigmatism is when one meridian of the cornea is more curved than the other. In regular astigmatism the horizontal and vertical meridians are perpendicular to each other. These can be corrected by contact lenses. In irregular astigmatism these meridians are not perpendicular to each other. These patients need proper evaluation by the ophthalmologists.
People with astigmatism will complain of blurry vision, eye strain or headache. In addition to spectacles, contact lens is a good option for such people.
Which lens to try will depend on the cylindrical power of the eye. Very mild astigmatism upto 0.5 can usually be corrected by spherical soft contact lenses. Mild to moderate cylinder upto about 2.5 can be corrected by soft lenses with cylinders called as toric lenses. Higher cylinders will require semisoft contact lenses ( RGP lenses ) . In some cases special lenses called as scleral lenses maybe necessary.
