What is Keratoconus Screening

Keratoconus Screening is an important eye examination to detect an eye condition called keratoconus.

Keratoconus is a disease where the conrnea thins out in certain areas leading to loss of vision and blurred vision. Constantly changing eye glasses number , frequent itching sensation in the eyes, blurred vision, high astigmatism or cylindrical number all can be symptoms of Keratoconus.

Here are the steps involved in keratoconus screening:Visual Acuity Test: This test is used to evaluate your vision and check for any vision abnormalities.

Refraction Test: This test helps to determine your eyeglass prescription.

Corneal Topography: This test takes a detailed map of the shape of the cornea and can detect any abnormalities in its shape that could indicate the beginning stages of keratoconus.

Anterior segment oct:

This is essentially a mri of the cornea

It gives detailed information of each layer of the cornea and helps diagnose early Keratoconus and helps dofferentiate between types of Keratoconus.

Pentacam/visionix:

This uses scheimflug camera technology to photograph the cornea in various slices giving a tomography of the cornea. Along with other tests it helps detect progression of the disease.

Slit Lamp Exam: This exam uses a special device called a slit lamp which magnifies and illuminates the eye to detect any abnormalities in the cornea.

Keratometry: This test measures the curvature of the cornea and can detect any abnormal shapes which could indicate the beginning stages of keratoconus.

Pachymetry: This test measures the thickness of the cornea and can detect any changes that could be indicative of keratoconus.

Ultrasound Biomicroscopy: This test uses sound waves to take a detailed image of the cornea and can detect any irregularities in its shape which could be indicative of keratoconus.

When to do Keratoconus Screening

  1. Keratoconus Screening should be done in people who are at risk of developing Keratoconus, such as those with a family history of the condition, those who have frequent eye rubbing or contact lens wear, those who have certain autoimmune diseases, and those with Down Syndrome.
  2. If a patient is experiencing symptoms of Keratoconus, such as blurred vision, light sensitivity, or distorted vision, they should consult a doctor urgently for Keratoconus Screening. If a patient has a change in the curvature of their cornea, they should also consult a doctor urgently for Keratoconus Screening. Additionally, if a patient is experiencing a decrease in their vision, they should seek urgent medical attention for Keratoconus Screening.

Diseases in which Keratoconus Screening is done

  1. Keratoconus: Keratoconus screening is important in the diagnosis of keratoconus because it can detect signs of corneal thinning and cone-shaped bulging. This test can also detect changes in corneal curvature which can indicate the presence of keratoconus.
  2. Fuchs’ dystrophy: Keratoconus screening can detect signs of corneal thinning and swelling which is indicative of the disease. This test can also help identify the presence of irregular corneal curvature which is a common sign of Fuchs’ dystrophy.
  3. Cataracts: Keratoconus screening can help detect changes in the corneal curvature which may be indicative of cataracts. This test can also help detect signs of corneal thinning which may be a sign of cataracts.
  4. Glaucoma: Keratoconus screening can detect changes in corneal curvature which may be indicative of glaucoma. This test can also detect signs of corneal thinning or swelling which may be indicative of glaucoma.
  5. Uveitis: Keratoconus screening can detect changes in corneal curvature which may be indicative of uveitis. This test can also detect signs of corneal thinning or swelling which may be indicative of uveitis.
  6. Corneal Dystrophy: Keratoconus screening can detect changes in corneal curvature which may be indicative of corneal dystrophy. This test can also detect signs of corneal thinning or swelling which may be indicative of corneal dystrophy.
  7. Keratitis: Keratoconus screening can detect changes in corneal curvature which may be indicative of keratitis. This test can also detect signs of corneal thinning or swelling which may be indicative of keratitis.
  8. Dry Eye Syndrome: Keratoconus screening can detect changes in corneal curvature which may be indicative of dry eye syndrome. This test can also detect signs of corneal thinning or swelling which may be indicative of dry eye syndrome.
  9. Retinal Detachment: Keratoconus screening can detect changes in corneal curvature which may be indicative of retinal detachment. This test can also detect signs of corneal thinning or swelling which may be indicative of retinal detachment.
  10. Diabetic Retinopathy: Keratoconus screening can detect changes in corneal curvature which may be indicative of diabetic retinopathy. This test can also detect signs of corneal thinning or swelling which may be indicative of diabetic retinopathy.

Symptoms that require Keratoconus Screening

  1. Blurry Vision: This is when your vision is not as clear as it normally is, and you may have difficulty seeing objects that are close or far away.
  2. Distorted Vision: This is when you notice that straight lines appear wavy or distorted.
  3. Halos Around Lights: This is when you can see a bright light around a point of light, such as a streetlight or a car's headlights.
  4. Increased Sensitivity to Light: This is when you experience a feeling of discomfort or pain when exposed to bright light.
  5. Poor Night Vision: This is when you experience difficulty seeing in the dark or at night.
  6. Changing Glasses Prescription: This is when you need to change your eyeglasses prescription more frequently than normal.
  7. Double Vision: This is when you see two of the same object at the same time.
  8. Astigmatism: This is when the cornea is not shaped correctly, resulting in blurred vision.
  9. Headaches: This is when you experience pain or discomfort in your head after looking at something for too long.
  10. Increased Tearing: This is when your eyes produce more tears than usual.

How Keratoconus Screening is done

  1. The Keratoconus Screening is a test that uses fully automated equipment to assess the curvature of your cornea. The automated equipment measures the curvature of your cornea in order to detect any abnormalities.
  2. The procedure is quick and non-invasive. First, you will need to place your chin on the chin rest and your forehead against the forehead rest of the equipment. Then, you will need to look straight ahead into the camera while the automated equipment takes images of your eyes.
  3. The automated equipment will measure your corneal curvature and compare it to the accepted normal range. This helps to detect any abnormalities that could be associated with Keratoconus.
  4. The results of the test will be available immediately after the procedure. We will then discuss the results and any treatment options with you.
  5. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the procedure, please let us know. We are here to help.

How long will Keratoconus Screening take

  1. .
  2. The Keratoconus Screening test typically takes about 30 minutes to complete. The results of the test are usually available within 24 hours. If there are any further tests that need to be done in order to confirm the results, it may take up to a week for the results to be ready.

Absolutely love how understanding Dr. Kumud Raut is. The only place where I have not been told about only the process of getting a surgery, but rather they insist on educating about how the eye functions and the importance of having a healthy eye before any surgery.
