What is Keratometry

Keratometry is a diagnostic test used by eye doctors to measure the curvature of the cornea, the transparent outer layer of the eye. This test helps eye doctors to determine the power of a corrective lens that will be required to correct vision.

It is usually done in combination with other tests such as refractometry, which measure the eye’s refractive power. The test involves shining a low-powered light beam into the eye and then measuring the reflection of the light with a keratometer.

The keratometer measures the curvature of the cornea in two directions, the vertical and horizontal meridians. The results are used to calculate the dioptric power of the cornea, which is then used to determine the corrective lens that will be needed to correct vision.

When to do Keratometry

  1. Keratometry is a procedure used to measure the curvature of the cornea. It is typically recommended for people with certain vision conditions, such as astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. It is also recommended for those who are considering refractive surgery, such as LASIK, or who are interested in contact lenses.
  2. In general, Keratometry should be done in people who have a refractive error, have had a previous eye injury, or have a history of eye disease. It is also recommended for people who have had eye surgery, such as cataract surgery, and people who are considering any type of vision correction surgery.
  3. If you experience sudden changes in vision, eye pain, redness, or other vision-related symptoms, you should consult a doctor immediately for Keratometry. This is especially important if you have recently had a refractive surgery, such as LASIK, as Keratometry can help identify potential complications.

Diseases in which Keratometry is done

  1. Keratoconus: Keratometry helps to measure the shape of the cornea and diagnose keratoconus. It can also help to determine the need for corneal transplantation in advanced cases.
  2. Astigmatism: Keratometry can help to determine the degree of astigmatism and the power of lenses that are necessary to correct the condition.
  3. Cataracts: Keratometry can measure the shape of the lens and help to diagnose cataracts.
  4. Glaucoma: Keratometry can help to measure the curvature of the cornea, which can then be used to diagnose glaucoma.
  5. Diabetic Retinopathy: Keratometry can help to measure the curvature of the cornea and help to diagnose diabetic retinopathy.
  6. Macular Degeneration: Keratometry can help to measure the shape of the macula and diagnose macular degeneration.
  7. Presbyopia: Keratometry can help to measure the curvature of the cornea and diagnose presbyopia.
  8. Strabismus: Keratometry can help to measure the angle of deviation and diagnose strabismus.
  9. Uveitis: Keratometry can help to measure the shape of the cornea and diagnose uveitis.
  10. Keratitis: Keratometry can help to measure the shape of the cornea and diagnose keratitis.

Symptoms that require Keratometry

  1. Blurry vision: When you look at things, they appear fuzzy or unclear.
  2. Double vision: When you look at something, it appears as if there are two of the same object.
  3. Poor night vision: Difficulty seeing in low light, such as at night.
  4. Astigmatism: When your vision is distorted due to the shape of your cornea being irregular.
  5. Glare: When bright lights cause you to squint your eyes or have difficulty seeing.
  6. Halos: When bright lights appear to have a halo or ring around them.
  7. Eye strain: When your eyes feel fatigued or uncomfortable after using them for a long period of time.
  8. Dry eyes: When your eyes feel itchy or dry, or when you have difficulty producing tears.
  9. Uneven vision: When your vision is clearer in one eye than the other.
  10. Abnormal curvature of the cornea: When the shape of your cornea is not normal, which can cause vision problems.

How Keratometry is done

  1. Keratometry is a test that is used to measure the curvature of the front surface of your eye. This test is typically used to determine the shape of your cornea and the power of your eye. The results of the test will be used to help your doctor determine the best type of corrective lenses that will help you see clearly.
  2. During the procedure, your doctor will use a machine called a keratometer. The keratometer is a fully automated device that will measure the curvature of your cornea. It will use a beam of light to project an image onto your eye. The keratometer will then measure the reflection of the image off the cornea to determine its curvature.
  3. The keratometer is designed to be comfortable and painless. You may feel a slight pressure on your eye as the keratometer is moved around, but this should not be uncomfortable. The test is quick and should take no more than a few minutes to complete.
  4. Once the test is completed, your doctor will have the information needed to determine the best type of corrective lenses for your eyes. Your doctor will discuss the results with you and answer any questions you may have.

How long will Keratometry take

  1. .
  2. The keratometry test will typically take about 10-15 minutes to complete. The reports will usually be available within 1-2 days after the test has been completed.

Absolutely love how understanding Dr. Kumud Raut is. The only place where I have not been told about only the process of getting a surgery, but rather they insist on educating about how the eye functions and the importance of having a healthy eye before any surgery.
