What is Ultrasound Biomicroscopy

Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM) is a specialized imaging technique used to evaluate the anterior segment of the eye.UBM uses sound waves to produce a two-dimensional real-time cross-sectional image of the eye structures, including the cornea, iris, lens, and ciliary body.

UBM is a non-invasive procedure with no known side effects.UBM can help diagnose a variety of ocular disorders, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other anterior segment diseases.

UBM can also be used to assess the integrity of the cornea, Lens implant, and corneal transplants.UBM is a very accurate and detailed imaging procedure that can help doctors diagnose and treat eye diseases.

  2. Individuals with eye or eyelid disorders or injuries, such as eyelid tumors, eyelid infections, or eye trauma.
  3. People with glaucoma or other diseases that can cause optic nerve damage.
  4. People with cataracts or other clouding of the lens.
  5. People with uveitis, or inflammation of the middle layer of the eye.
  6. People with diabetic retinopathy or other diseases that can cause damage to the retina.
  7. When to consult a doctor urgently for Ultrasound Biomicroscopy:
  8. Sudden loss of vision, double vision, or eye pain.
  9. Severe eye trauma, such as the result of a car accident or a fall.

Diseases in which Ultrasound Biomicroscopy is done

  1. Glaucoma: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to measure the thickness of the trabecular meshwork, which can help to diagnose glaucoma.
  2. Uveitis: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to identify areas of inflammation within the eye, helping to diagnose uveitis.
  3. Retinal Detachment: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to detect the presence of a retinal detachment, which can be a serious condition.
  4. Macular Degeneration: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to detect the presence of macular degeneration, which is a progressive deterioration of the macula.
  5. Choroidal Neovascularization: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to detect the presence of choroidal neovascularization, which is a growth of abnormal blood vessels that can lead to vision loss.
  6. Diabetic Retinopathy: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to detect the presence of diabetic retinopathy, which is caused by high blood sugar levels and can lead to vision loss.
  7. Vitreous Hemorrhage: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to detect the presence of a vitreous hemorrhage, which is caused by a rupture of a blood vessel.
  8. Cataracts: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to detect the presence of a cataract, which is a clouding of the lens that can lead to vision loss.
  9. Cystoid Macular Edema: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to detect the presence of cystoid macular edema, which is a swelling of the macula that can lead to vision loss.
  10. Intraocular Foreign Bodies: Ultrasound biomicroscopy can be used to detect the presence of an intraocular foreign body, which is a foreign object in the eye that can lead to vision loss.

Symptoms that require Ultrasound Biomicroscopy

  1. Flashing lights or floaters – These are small dots or lines that seem to move across your vision. They are usually harmless, but if you are seeing them, it is important to get checked out.
  2. Blurry vision – This means that things appear to be out of focus or hazy.
  3. Loss of peripheral vision – This is when you can’t see as far to the sides when looking straight ahead.
  4. Halos around lights – This is when you notice rings around lights when you look at them.
  5. Double vision – This is when you see two images of the same object instead of one.
  6. Visual field defect – This is when part of your vision is missing or blurry, like looking through a tunnel.
  7. Unexplained vision loss – This means that you have lost some of your vision without any explanation.
  8. Eye redness – This is when your eyes appear red due to inflammation.
  9. Unexplained eye pain – This is when your eyes are in pain but there is no obvious cause.
  10. Unexplained changes in pupil size – This is when your pupil size changes without any explanation.

How Ultrasound Biomicroscopy is done

  1. Ultrasound biomicroscopy is an imaging technique used to examine the eye and its surrounding structures in detail. With this procedure, the doctor will be able to see the front part of the eye and evaluate the health of the cornea, iris, and lens.
  2. The procedure using fully automated equipment is simple and non-invasive. It will involve placing a small probe on the eye and using high-frequency sound waves to create a detailed image. The sound waves will be sent to a computer and the images will be displayed on the monitor.
  3. The images produced by this test are very detailed and allow the doctor to evaluate the condition of the eye. This information can be used to help diagnose and treat a variety of conditions.
  4. The procedure itself is painless and usually takes only a few minutes to complete. After the test is finished, the doctor will be able to discuss the results with you.

Absolutely love how understanding Dr. Kumud Raut is. The only place where I have not been told about only the process of getting a surgery, but rather they insist on educating about how the eye functions and the importance of having a healthy eye before any surgery.
