Halos around lights are circular rings of light that appear around a source of light, such as headlights or streetlights. These rings may appear as bright, blurry circles or as rainbow-colored circles. Halos around lights can cause glare, reduce the clarity of vision, and interfere with daily activities, such as driving.
Halos around lights can be caused by various eye problems, such as cataracts, corneal edema, glaucoma, and dry eye syndrome. Cataracts are the most common cause of halos around lights in older adults. Corneal edema, which is the swelling of the cornea, can cause halos around lights in patients with Fuchs' dystrophy or after refractive surgeries. Glaucoma, a condition that damages the optic nerve, can cause halos around lights in patients with advanced stages of the disease. Dry eye syndrome, which is the inadequate production of tears, can cause halos around lights in patients with severe symptoms.
The treatment for halos around lights depends on the underlying cause. Cataracts can be treated with surgery, which replaces the cloudy lens with a clear artificial lens. Corneal edema can be treated with eye drops or a corneal transplant. Glaucoma can be treated with eye drops, laser therapy, or surgery. Dry eye syndrome can be treated with artificial tears, prescription eye drops, or punctal plugs. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience halos around lights, as this symptom can be a sign of a serious eye problem.
Some eye problems that cause halos around lights, such as cataracts and glaucoma, cannot be prevented. However, you can reduce your risk of developing other eye problems by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, wearing protective eyewear, and getting regular eye exams. If you experience halos around lights, avoid driving at night or in low-light conditions until you have seen an eye doctor and received a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Absolutely love how understanding Dr. Kumud Raut is. The only place where I have not been told about only the process of getting a surgery, but rather they insist on educating about how the eye functions and the importance of having a healthy eye before any surgery.
