What is Visual Field Test

A Visual Field Test is an eye examination used to check for any vision loss in the peripheral or side vision. The test is done by having the patient look into a bowl-shaped device and follow a light spot as it moves around the bowl.

The test measures how well you can see objects in various locations in your field of vision. It can detect abnormalities and signs of glaucoma or other eye diseases, as well as any damage to the optic nerve.

It is typically used in conjunction with other tests to provide a comprehensive evaluation of your eye health. The results of the test are used to help diagnose and monitor conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other ocular diseases.

When to do Visual Field Test

  1. A Visual Field Test should be done for any patient with a history of vision problems, such as glaucoma, optic nerve damage, or diabetic retinopathy. It is also recommended for people who have a family history of vision problems, or any neurological disorder.
  2. When it comes to urgent situations, patients should consult their doctor immediately if they experience sudden vision changes, such as double vision, loss of peripheral vision, or flashes and floaters. Other signs that require a prompt visit to the doctor include severe headaches, nausea, and eye pain.

  3. Macular Degeneration: Visual field test can help detect signs of macular degeneration as it can help assess the progression of the disease, as well as measure any changes in the field of vision.
  4. Optic Nerve Atrophy: Visual field test can help detect signs of optic nerve atrophy by detecting any damage to the nerve fibers that connect the eye to the brain.
  5. Cataracts: Visual field test can help detect signs of cataracts by assessing how well the eye is able to see and detect objects in the peripheral vision.
  6. Uveitis: Visual field test can help detect signs of uveitis by detecting any damage to the eye's retina.
  7. Retinitis Pigmentosa: Visual field test can help detect signs of retinitis pigmentosa by detecting any changes in the field of vision.

How Visual Field Test is done

  1. The Visual Field Test is a routine procedure used to diagnose eye diseases. The test will be conducted with a fully automated machine.
  2. First, the patient will be asked to sit in a comfortable chair and face a bowl-like device with a central target inside. The patient will be asked to focus on the central target and keep their head still. The machine will then project small lights onto the bowl.
  3. The patient will be asked to press a button whenever they see a light. The machine will record the patient’s responses and measure how quickly they react to the lights. This will give us an indication of the patient’s vision field and help diagnose any eye disease.
  4. The entire test should take about 10 minutes. During the test, the patient should remain relaxed and keep their eyes focused on the central target.
  5. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask me.

Absolutely love how understanding Dr. Kumud Raut is. The only place where I have not been told about only the process of getting a surgery, but rather they insist on educating about how the eye functions and the importance of having a healthy eye before any surgery.
