What is Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, clear layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye.It is also known as 'pink eye' due to the common symptom of redness and irritation in the eyes.It is usually caused by a virus, bacteria, or an allergic reaction.Common symptoms of conjunctivitis include redness and itching in the eyes, a gritty feeling, increased sensitivity to light, and a watery or thick discharge from the eyes.If left untreated, conjunctivitis can cause severe irritation and discomfort, and can even lead to vision loss.It is important to get conjunctivitis treated in order to prevent any further damage to the eyes and to provide relief from the symptoms.Treatment for conjunctivitis can include antibiotics, antihistamines, and steroid drops.

Treatment

  1. Medical Treatment
    1. Antibiotic Eye Drops: These antibiotics are applied directly to the eye in order to fight off the infection.
    2. Antibiotic Ointment: This ointment is applied directly to the eye to help fight off the infection.
    3. Cold Compresses: Cold compresses are used to reduce inflammation and provide relief from the symptoms of conjunctivitis.
    4. Artificial Tears: Artificial tears help to lubricate and soothe the eye, reducing the irritation caused by the infection.
    5. Avoiding Rubbing the Eye: Rubbing the eye can spread the infection from one eye to the other, so it is important to avoid this.
    6. Frequent Hand Washing: This helps to reduce the spread of the infection from one person to another.
    7. Wearing Sunglasses: This helps to reduce the risk of the infection spreading to other people.
    8. Allergy Medication: In cases of allergic conjunctivitis, antihistamines can help to reduce the symptoms.
  2. Surgical Treatment
    1. Antibiotic Drops or Ointment: Antibiotic drops or ointment are a common treatment for conjunctivitis. This treatment consists of applying antibiotic medication to the affected eye(s) several times a day for one to two weeks.
    2. Corticosteroid Drops or Ointment: Corticosteroid drops or ointment may be prescribed in cases where the conjunctivitis is caused by an allergy or is severe. These drops or ointments are applied several times a day for one to two weeks.
    3. Oral Antibiotics: Oral antibiotics may be prescribed if the conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria. Oral antibiotics are usually taken once or twice a day for one to two weeks.
    4. Surgery: Surgery may be necessary in some cases of conjunctivitis. Surgery may involve removing any foreign bodies that have become embedded in the eye, or an incision and drainage procedure to remove any pus that has accumulated in the affected area.
  3. Home Remedies

Absolutely love how understanding Dr. Kumud Raut is. The only place where I have not been told about only the process of getting a surgery, but rather they insist on educating about how the eye functions and the importance of having a healthy eye before any surgery.
